Many people have a dream of trekking to Everest Base Camp (EBC). Some even wish to climb Mt. Everest. Sherpa Expedition & Trekking can assure you that standing in the footsteps of Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay will give a feeling of nostalgia and a sense of achievement. This is no walk in the park but is in fact a high altitude trek to a culturally rich and fascinating region of the Himalayas. Trekkers have been making this epic journey to Everest Base Camp since the early 90’s following in the footsteps of Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay’s – the first mountaineers to climb Mt Everest. Being surrounded by enormous peaks and trekking through a region rich in culture, fauna and flora provide an amazing experience. There are numerous snow-covered peaks soaring more than 8000m skyward as well as amazing alpine lakes and glaciers.
On the trail you will pass Sherpa villages rich in culture and traditions, such as the Tengboche Monastery, and be trekking within the bounds of the Sagarmatha National Park. The views from Mt. Kala Patthar are probably the finest mountain views in all of Nepal. The trail to EBC passes through vividly colorful rhododendron forests and has sightings of wildlife, such as musk deer and yaks grazing in high alpine pastures.
The great Everest Base Camp journey begins with a 40 minute plane trip to Lukla, then a trek towards Phakding and then on to the Sherpa town of Namche Bazaar, often referred to as the gateway to Everest. From Namche Bazaar, the trail takes us to Tengboche, where there is a Buddhist fortification (Dawa Choling Gompa). After leaving Tengboche the trail heads to Dingboche that also offers fantastic views of the surrounding mountains. As we climb to higher altitudes the oxygen levels decrease making it more physically demanding. We then head to Dingboche and then on to Lobuche (4940m). The last leg of our journey takes us to Everest base camp (5,364m) At EBC we get to view the massive Khumbu Glacier that begins at 4,900m and ends at 7,600m. After leaving EBC we then return to Gorak Shep (5185m). The following morning we leave Gorak Shep and climb to the famous viewpoint, Kala Patthar (5555m) where we have some more spectacular views of Mt. Everest and the Khumbu Glacier.
From here we head back to Gorak Shep then on to Pheriche, and then descend on a steep trail to Namche Bazaar. The last day of our trek leads us back to Lukla and then by plane to Kathmandu.
The Everest Base Camp trek is relatively difficult, but with the time acclimatizing at lower altitudes it minimizes any risk of altitude sickness and prepares you for higher altitude climbing.
