- Individual arrival in Dublin and onward journey to Athlone. First visit the famous Tullamore Dew Whiskey Distillery (optional) in Tullamore and learn about the history and production process of the famous whiskey on an informative tour. There will be a small tasting at the end. You will then visit the beautiful monastery complex of Clonmacnoise, picturesquely situated on the banks of the River Shannon (optional). This important early medieval monastery was founded in 548 by St. Ciaran and developed into a recognized place of learning. Despite repeated looting and fires over the centuries, the remains, including churches, round towers and high crosses, are now an impressive open-air museum. Continue to Athlone. Worth a visit is Athlone Castle, a 12th century castle with a great view over the River Shannon and the town. Visit Seáns Bar, the oldest pub in Ireland, and experience the cozy atmosphere with traditional Irish music (optional). One night in the Athlone region. Approx. 160 km/approx. 2.5 hrs.
